Hundreds of young dancers from well-known dance programs throughout Florida will gather in a festival setting for the 10th annual Young Dancers Workshop at Santa Fe College on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2014. Two public performances are included in the events.
The festival provides opportunities for middle- and high-school age students to learn from guest instructors who offer dance classes in ballet, modern, jazz, African, hip hop, musical theatre and other special topics. A highlight will be the aerial dance training offered by On The Fly Productions, whose “Mothmen” were recently featured on the “America’s Got Talent” television program.
The first public event is the Informal Welcome Performance of featured works by the Florida Dance Association’s on-tour participants. The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the Fine Arts Hall at SF College’s Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville. Tickets are $5 and seating is limited, so please purchase tickets early.
The second public event is the Formal Showcase Performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Fine Arts Hall at SF College. The program will include performances by the Young Dancers Workshop participants as well as students from the host schools. Dance Theatre Santa Fe will perform one newly commissioned piece from the Rennie Harris Puremovement dance company and a new work co-choreographed by On The Fly Productions and SF College Fine Arts Department Chairperson Alora Haynes. Dancers from the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance will also perform a new work. Tickets are $10 and seating is limited, so please purchase tickets early.

The three partners in the Young Dancers Workshop—the Florida Dance Association, the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance and Santa Fe College—continue to shape this annual event by actively working to enrich the program for students, audiences and artists alike.
Serving dance professionals and students, dance businesses and organizations, and dance audiences and enthusiasts, the Florida Dance Association (FDA) helps dance artists network, collaborate and support each other to advance dance arts throughout the state. One of only a few remaining organizations of its kind in the country, FDA has for 36 years given scholarships, presented dance groups, provided workshops, employed dancers, teachers and choreographers and helped to spread awareness of up-and-coming dance artists from all over the country. The association’s programs help to increase communication within the state’s dance community and help to foster a sense of unity and pride among Florida’s dance artists.
The Young Dancers Workshop is sponsored by the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Department, the Florida Dance Association, the University Florida School of Theatre and Dance, Spring Hill Suites and Best Western Gateway Grand, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs and Publix Supermarket Charities.
