2015 Space Challenge at Santa Fe College

2015 Space Challenge at Santa Fe College

Santa Fe College Community Education will be launching College for Kids (CFK) spring break Space Challenge from March 23-26. This is an entirely new program designed to engage both students and SF Collegeâ•˙s unique resources including an on campus planetarium and zoo. Students in grades 4th-8th will launch into an adventure of a lifetime as they explore the space frontier through hands-on, interactive, team activities. Students will take on the role of a mission designer, controller or astronaut as they learn teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills while tackling the challenges of space exploration.

During the four day camp, students will visit the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium. Open since 2006 it features a Goto Choronos mechanical-optical projector capable of accurately displaying the constellations from 10,000 years past to 10,000 years in the future.  Coordinator and co-host of the PBS TV series Star Gazers, James Albury, will conduct a tour of the universe using the latest high definition full dome digital projection system. Students will study Kepler and Hubble telescopes and how they have enhanced our knowledge of the universe, as well as, virtually land on planets within and outside our solar system. In addition, students will visit the SF Teaching Zoo where they can see over 75 different animals, both native and exotic species. As students walk the quarter mile saw dust trail, they will record observations of the animal life and environments they encounter in a scientific journal.

Classroom activities will be hands on and include both collaborative and individual tasks. Students will work in teams building and programming Lego Mindstorm EV3 robots to perform mock missions.  They will learn about propulsion systems by constructing and launching a model rocket. Then, using their zoo observations, students will create a self-sustained environment, called a biodome, teeming with life.
