Horvath and the Saints cruise past Lake Sumter, 13-4

Box Score

Santa Fe center fielder and lead-off hitter Nick Horvath continued his tear through the Mid-Florida Conference, going 4-for-6 with five runs scored, a homerun and a double to lead the Saints past Lake Sumter 13-4 to complete the four game season sweep over the Lakehawks.  The victory moves SF to 28-8 overall and 15-4 in the Mid-Florida Conference.

Tom Watson (7-1)  started on the hill and held Lake Sumter in check, allowing just one run over six innings.

The Saints got things going early, plating three runs in the first inning on RBI hits by designated hitter Cliff Bryant and second baseman Tyler Kinney for the 3-0 lead.

In the second SF put five runs on the board, punctuated by a deep two run homer from Bryant (2), his third RBI in two innings.

After two more runs in the third, the Saints led 10-1.  Chandler Rodriguez doubled home one of the runs, and Tyler Kinney drew a bases loaded walk to plate the other run.

Horvath (3) and Rodriguez (2) continued their tear in the sixth, both homering on back to back pitches to make the lead 12-1.  Lake Sumter scored three in the seventh to extend the game and avoid the run rule, but the rally was far short as the Saints cruised to a 13-4 win.

Rodriguez, hitting in the two hole behind Horvath, finished 3-for-6 with four runs scored, a double, and three RBI.  Cliff Bryant was 2-for-2 with a homerun and three RBI, and Jared Shouppe was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

The Saints can clinch a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament with a win on Friday, April 17 at Daytona State against the Falcons.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
