The Santa Fe Saints (Women’s Basketball) came up just short against Hillsborough CC on Saturday in Tampa, falling to the Hawks 74-69. SF struggled to score in the first quarter, netting only five points, and never fully recovered despite a never quit attitude. SF was without starters Evelina Avleeva, and Corey Staples, and key back-up Tatyana Rock.
Santa Fe (11-10, 3-2 MFC) trailed 10-5 after the first 10 minutes, with all five points coming on free throws. They played much better in the second offensively, and stayed within a contestable score at 32-28 at the half time break.
HCC came out of the locker room on a mission and grabbed a 55-44 lead three quarters through the game, making it an uphill battle for the final 10 minutes.
The Saints clawed their way back in the fourth, but their rally wasn’t enough as they fell by five.
Bri Roberts led SF with 23 points, including 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Desa’Rai Shaw finished with 13 points, and Sonya Franklin had 11.
