The NJCAA #1/FCSAA #1 Santa Fe Saints (39-7) took the first step towards their quest for a FCSAA Title on Sunday, defeating Eastern Florida State College 6-1 on the strength of four Hugo Valdes RBI and a stellar performance on the mound from Trent Johnson.

Johnson went eight innings, allowing just one unearned run.  He struck out seven in the process.

Valdes drove in the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Saints didn’t record another hit until the seventh.  With two outs Valdes cleared the bases with an opposite field shot to left center, giving SF a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Troy Bacon pitched around two hits in the ninth to seal the victory.

Valdes was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI and Tyler Kinney was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

SF now moves on to face the winner of St. Petersburg College and Chipola College on Tuesday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m..
