MORTON AND BACON PITCH #6 SAINTS PAST #5 ST. JOHN’S RIVER, 1-0

Gainesville, FL – The fans that appreciate pitching were treated to an old fashioned duel on Saturday in Palatka as the FCSAA #6 Saints of Santa Fe College and #5 Vikings of St. John’s River State College played the seldom seen 1-0 college baseball game.

Santa Fe (20-7, 3-1 MFC) came out on the winning end thanks to a first inning run and stellar pitching from sophomores Kyle Morton (4-1) and Troy Bacon.

“I’m really proud of the toughness Kyle showed today,” said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs.  “He was pretty sick last night an early today with a stomach illness.  He really stayed within himself and pitched outstanding.  Bacon was not as sharp as he has been in the past but got us some huge strikeouts when we needed them.”

The lone run of the game came on an Alex Goebel RBI single in the first.  From there the three St. John’s pitchers shut down the SF bats, but the all the damage that needed to be done was done.  Pitching and clutch defense held the Vikings the rest of the way.

“Our guys made some big defensive plays, including two by Mikey Navarrette that kept the lead for us,” said Wiggs.  “The game really had a playoff feel to it and this was a great road win.”

Bacon pitched out of jams in all three innings he appeared in to earn his seventh save.  He has yet to give up a run in 13 appearances and 22 innings pitched.

The Saints and Vikings will meet again on Monday, March 13 in Gainesville for a 3:00 PM game.  Fans can watch live on the Saints Sports Network.
