NY Dance Project Joins Dance Theatre Santa Fe for “Elements of Style,” March 23-24, 2018

March 1, 2018 – Guest artists from the New York Dance Project (NYDP) will perform and collaborate with members of the Dance Theatre of Santa Fe (DTSF) to create the finale for the two evening performances of “Elements of Style,” DTSF’s annual program that features classical, contemporary and hip-hop dances. Elements of Style will be held Friday and Saturday, March 23, and March 24, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. Members of Dance Theatre of Santa Fe alone will perform a third program at noon Friday, March 23. The evening performances will take place in two acts, Act One by DTSF and Act Two by NYDP. All performances are in the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall.

Tickets are $15 main floor and $12 balcony for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for SF students, faculty and staff with a valid SFID. For ticket information, call the SF Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the SF Fine Arts ticket website at sfcollege.edu/finearts.

“The New York Dance Project is a new company that’s bridging the gap between established professional dancers and dancers-in-training,” explained SF Fine Arts Department Chair Alora Haynes. “NYDP will be here for two weeks and our intermediate and advanced dance students will be taking company classes every day along with the professional dancers. It’s going to be wonderful to see how our students’ levels change in a two-week time frame. This is a shared concert for all the right reasons—we want to help this new company get started and they want to help amateur dancers become professionals.”

In Act Two of the evening performances of “Elements of Style,” NYDP’s dancers will present new works choreographed by Tyler Gilstrap, Africa Guzman and Gabrielle Lamb. Gilstrap is a founding member of Battleworks Dance Company who worked as an associate choreographer for the Sochi Olympics. Guzman is a former principal dancer with Netherlands Dance Theater and Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid. Lamb served as artistic director of Pigeonwing Dance and is a winner of the Princess Grace Award for Choreography.

“This has been a really exciting year for students and faculty members because at the end of spring term, we will have had five different guest artists in residence,” said SF associate professor of dance and director of DTSF Sarah Harkness-Sebastian. “‘Elements of Style’ gives our young dancers the chance to show audiences a piece of everything they’ve learned all year. There’s something in the program to draw everyone in, and I love how audience members often come away after discovering that they’ve been moved by something they didn’t expect to like.”

“Elements of Style” is sponsored in part by Santa Fe College, SF Student Life, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
