Jose: The Smash Brothers was something we always called ourselves. With obstacles or barriers in life, it’s our reminder to just smash through it. In Camden, NJ—that’s known for violence, crime, homicides—we saw our family struggling to make ends meet. But we were raised to do more, to do better, not just for us, but for our family as well.

Angelo: When we set a goal, our goals don’t change. If we set it, even if we set it high, we don’t quit.

Jose: We never planned on going to the military, but we come from a place that’s not very wealthy, and to pay for not one but two tuitions out of pocket, that’s not the route we wanted to take. So we changed our plan, but still had that end goal in mind. And I feel like this plan—the military, two years at Santa Fe—is better. I probably would have dropped out of school by now. It turned out to be a blessing more than anything.

Angelo: If you want something in life, stay committed. Surround yourself with a support system, and just don’t quit.
