November 9, 2018 – The newly formed Santa Fe College (SF) Percussion Ensemble will join the SF Big Band for “An Evening of Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, in the SF Fine Arts Hall on the Northwest Campus.
Tickets are $15 for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for SF students, faculty and staff with valid SFID. For ticket information, call the SF Box Office at 352-395-4181 or visit the Fine Arts ticket website at sfcollege.edu/finearts.
“The new Percussion Ensemble includes four students who have given their time to work on college-level material for the percussion section,” explained SF Music professor Steve Bingham, Ph.D. “Directed by Garrett Hecker, who has a Ph.D. in composition from the University of Florida, the ensemble will perform about five pieces before the Santa Fe Big Band takes the stage.”
Under Bingham’s direction, the SF Big Band will perform a variety of jazz standards including works from Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, a tribute to Aretha Franklin and many more.
Bingham’s Ph.D. is in music education from the University of Florida. He has had a long career as a band director and professional musician. His woodwind students (clarinet, saxophone and oboe) have gone on to higher education at the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of South Florida, University of North Florida and University of Central Florida.
