January 7, 2018 – Both the men’s and women’s Santa Fe College basketball teams opened Mid-Florida Conference play with victories over Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The women’s team, led by SF freshman Danasia Gamble’s career high 24 points, dominated FSC-J with a 91-38 win Saturday afternoon.
“We are very proud of how hard our team played today,” said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins.
“I liked our defensive effort and really enjoyed watching our offensive execution .”
Stephanie Jackson finished with 17 points while Airneisha Gamble chipped in with 13 and Janasia Law added 12.
The Saints (10-6), ranked ninth in the latest FCSAA poll, will host Daytona State Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The men’s team overcome a slow start to earn a 67-44 win over FSC-J. Ivan Smith, in just his second game back after missing the first two months of the season with a foot injury, scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the first half to help the Saints improve to 11-6 on the season.
“It’s never easy to win on the road,” said Saints head coach Chris Mowry. “I felt we had a good defensive effort all game. Everyone played, and everyone contributed. I’m happy for our players.”
Brady Fernandes finished with 14 points, while Admir Besovic also hit double figures for the Saints with 12 points.
The Saints host Daytona State at the SF gym Wednesday evening immediately following the women’s game. Tip off is expected to be approximately 8 p.m.
