SF Women’s Basketball: Saints Comeback Earns 90-81 Win Over Central Florida

January 17, 2019 – The Santa Fe Saints women’s basketball team trailed by as many as 20 points in the third quarter but rallied back to get a 90-81 win over Mid-Florida Conference rival College of Central Florida Wednesday night in Ocala.

“I’m proud of the grit we showed today,” said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins. “We adjusted to their great offense and finally settled in and got some stops.”

CF (7-14, 0-3 MFC) led 20-17 after the first quarter and 46-38 at the half. The Patriots expanded their lead by outscoring the Saints 14-2 to start the third quarter prompting Stebbins to call a timeout to settle her team down.

The Saints (12-7, 2-1 MFC) responded well and finished out the period on a scoring run of their own to cut the deficit to 71-64 heading into the fourth quarter.

“CF shot better than they have all year and we didn’t defend that well, but we stayed with it and finally got some shots to fall in the second half,” Stebbins said.

The final stanza was all Saints as they outscored the home team 26-10 to post the win. The Saints converted on 23 of 34 free throw attempts, many in the final minutes, while the Patriots were 11 of 16 from the charity stripe.

All five SF starters scored in double figures led by Stephanie Jackson with 19 and Julie Fournier with 18. Danasia Bogle, Janasia Law and Chardell Jones each scored 17. Jones and Law each also recorded double-digits in rebounds with Jones grabbing 13 and Law 12.

The Saints are off until Wednesday when they will host Florida State College/Jacksonville for a game scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. The men’s basketball team, who lost last night to CF, will host Eastern Florida State College Saturday at 2 p.m.
