SF Baseball: Saints Rally Past Seminole, 14-11

March 28, 2019 – A four-run eighth inning powered the Santa Fe Saints baseball team to a 14-11 win over Seminole State College Wednesday afternoon in Gainesville.

Eleven different pitchers took the mound in the seesaw battle that went into the eighth inning tied 10-10. After the Raiders stranded two runners in the top of the eighth, the Saints put together the winning rally in the bottom of the frame.

Jonathan Logsdon was hit by a pitch to start the inning and pinch runner Isaiah Perry moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Stafford. Brock Edge followed with a single to score Perry and moved to second when Kyler Marquis was hit by a pitch. Garrett Mathes was then walked intentionally to load the bases and Jarrod Cande promptly singled in two runs. Mathes scored on a sacrifice fly by Cade Westbrook to finish off the four-run inning.

“It was a great come from behind win,” said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs. “I’m proud of our hitters battling throughout the game.”

Tyler Jones (1-1) earned the win and Mathes picked up his fifth save of the year for the Saints.

“Tyler gave us two big scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth to set us up for the winning rally,” said Wiggs.

Edge, Mathes, Westbrook and Logsdon had two hits apiece for the Saints while Cande and Westbrook each drove in four runs in the game.

The Saints (24-12, 5-6 MFC) have won four of their last five games and will travel to Sanford to finish up the three-game series against SSC Friday afternoon before returning to Gainesville to take Florida State College/Jacksonville Saturday at 1 p.m.
