SF Athletics: Seven Baseball and Four Softball Players Earn MFC Honors

May 6, 2019 – The Mid-Florida Conference All-Conference teams for 2019 saw seven Santa Fe College baseball and four softball players chosen. SF’s baseball team was also honored with the

MFC Defensive Player of the Year award.

On the baseball team, First Team All-Conference includes Anthony Arguelles, a freshman right-handed pitcher (5-0, 3.17 ERA) with 65.1 innings pitched, 69 strikeouts and zero walks. Arguelles also threw a no-hitter Feb. 2.

Five players were selected to the Second Team: outfielder Brock Edge, right-handed pitcher Michael Paul, first baseman Garrett Mathes, catcher Caleb Stafford and third baseman Cade Westbrook.

Sophomore Edge had a .329 batting average with 42 runs scored, 10 doubles, four home runs, 36 runs batted in and five stolen bases in six attempts. He will continue his baseball and academic career with the University of Florida. Paul (7-2, 2.38 ERA) had 52 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. Mathes earned his spot with a .340 batting average, 40 runs scored, 15 doubles, six home runs and 40 runs batted in. Stafford had a .231 batting average with 17 runs scored, two doubles and 15 runs batted in. Westbrook impressed this season with a .312 batting average, 17 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples and 40 runs batted in.

Conference defensive player of the year was awarded to Parker Beiderer, a sophomore with a .333 batting average, 38 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, 24 runs batted in and 16 stolen bases in 19 attempts. His defensive effort throughout the season earned him this top honor.

Coach Wiggs and the Saints are heading to the Florida State College Activities Association State tournament for the 10th time in 13 years Friday, May 10, as they face Florida Southwestern State College in Lakeland, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

SF’s softball team saw four players selected to All-Mid Florida Conference teams.

First Team honors went to sophomores Adriana Garip and Cameron Trehy, and Second Team honors included freshman Dontaysha Gobourne and returner Emily Yakel.

Garip, who anchors third base for the Saints, had a .349 batting average. She scored 31 runs, nine doubles, four home runs and 30 runs batted in. Outfielder Trehy also had a great season with a .338 batting average, 19 runs scored, 11 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 43 runs batted in. Gobourne, an outfielder and pitcher, had a .349 batting average with 25 runs scored, five doubles, four home runs, 29 runs batted in and 17 stolen bases in 20 attempts. Catcher Yakel had a .266 batting average, 25 runs scored, five doubles, 10 home runs and 29 runs batted in.  She has signed with Lynn University to continue her softball and academic career.

Under Coach Fico’s first year at the helm, the Saints posted a 23-28 season record which includes a postseason appearance.
