February 24, 2020 – The Mid-Florida Conference Champion Santa Fe Saints women’s basketball team tuned up for the upcoming NJCAA Region VIII/FCSAA State Tournament with a dominating 89-61 win over Florida State College – Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.
The Saints got out to an early lead and held a 46-20 advantage at halftime.
“I am proud of how our team opened the game and set the tone,” said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins. “Our third quarter was undisciplined, and they scored nearly as many points from the foul line in the third quarter as they did the entire first half. But credit our kids with responding and having a better fourth quarter.”
MFC Player of the Year Aleisha Curry led the Saints with 20 points and 10 rebounds recording her 11th double-double of the season. Danasia Bogle scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists while Rosalee Nicholson scored 11 points and Taniah Bowers had six points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
“Overall it was a good win and we played well,” said Stebbins. ”But we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Credit FSCJ with forcing a lot of turnovers.”
It was the 10th win in a row for the Saints (19-10, 8-1 MFC) who are presently ranked sixth in the state and will now prepare for their first round game at the state tournament against the number two seed out of the Southern Conference Thursday, March 5, in Niceville, Florida.
