President Broadie Encourages SF Community to Complete the Census

September 8, 2020 – Santa Fe College President Paul Broadie II, Ph.D., released the following statement to the college community to encourage them, to make sure they complete the census. The last day to fill in census information is Wednesday, Sept. 30. For more information, please visit my2020census.gov.

Dear Santa Fe Family,

If you have not already done so, it is important that you complete the census so that you can be counted.

Participation in the census guides the direction of federal funding and programs our community receives for the next 10 years. By completing the census, you help ensure that our community receives its fair share of funding for school lunch programs, our highways, early childhood education programs, public housing, and employment assistance. Here at the college, we see firsthand how the census guides the distribution of funds for federal loans and grants enabling our neediest students to take classes that improve their prospects for the future.

The stakes are high. In 2010 Florida had the third largest undercount, resulting in a loss of significant federal funding over 10 years. It is estimated that the undercount in Alachua County resulted in losses totaling approximately $390 million in funding. Everyone is directly impacted by this national tally.

Let’s make sure that we are all counted.

Best regards,

Paul
