You Might As Well Enjoy The Ride
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
In his insightful song “The Secret O’ Life,” legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor wrote about the need to enjoy the passage of time. “Try not to try too hard,” he sings, “It’s such a lovely ride.” Considering the performance anxiety associated with college coursework, and a lingering global pandemic, his lyrics may seem simple-minded and out of touch. Yet finding solace in everyday pleasures is sage advice.
While it may not be the sort of knowledge you thought you would acquire in college, you will likely use the lessons you learn about yourself and about “adulting” long after you have forgotten basic algebraic equations. That’s where the Santa Fe College Counseling Center can help.
“It’s just your point of view. How does it feel for you?”
The American Counseling Association sees members of the counseling profession as playing a vital role in helping “assist their clients and students in dealing with the challenges life presents.” Sometimes that can be pervasive feelings of depression or isolation. As Taylor sings in another of his famous hits, “I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.” At other times, it may simply be a desire to thrive and not just survive.
By talking with a counselor, you will be able to see your problems from another perspective, or learn coping strategies that can allow you to make significant changes in your life. We hear in Taylor’s words the reminder that life should be exciting and memorable – like an amusement park filled with thrilling rides. But you have choices to make. If your life seems to be going around in circles, maybe it’s time to get off the merry-go-round. If you’re tired of the emotional roller coaster, you may be ready for another type of ride. Perhaps the tunnel of love.
