February 1, 2023 – In honor of Black History Month, Santa Fe College’s Association of Black Faculty and Staff (ABFS) will offer information important to SF and the community at large.

This week, the topic is – Barbara Higgins

Barbara Higgins became the first Black professional to work in the Alachua County Courthouse and began to impact the local community by advocating with Gainesville Women for Equal Rights (GWER). Mrs. Higgins was a community servant devoted to solving economic inequities.

The Alachua County Housing Authority Barbara Higgins Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 to provide scholarships for residents throughout Alachua County.

June 8 is proclaimed Barbara Higgins Day in the City of Gainesville and there is a local park named in her honor in the Gainesville community.
