![Pride month -- just like any month that celebrates a certain group or cluster of identities -- is always strange to me. I don't mean for my reflection to be critical or ungrateful, but I wonder how much Pride month really does to generate understanding around what's at stake within this idea of "Pride?" We live in a state, nestled within a country, that does not prioritize the lives of queer folks, trans folks, and particularly QTBIPOC folks. This year, amidst the violent legislation being enacted by the Florida legislative bodies and across the U.S., pride month feels particularly strange. Like, is Pride month here to make money? Is it here to advocate for the lives and livelihoods of trans teens and gay dads and nonbinary friends? We don't just need pride, we need a reprioritization placed on the lives of folks most marginalized due to their identities.](https://news.sfcollege.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/image.png)
![Pride Month means respecting, understanding, and loving everyone regardless of their gender or orientation. I have an asexual mother, gay uncle, bisexual cousin, and two lesbian cousins who I support and love unconditionally. ![Pride month to me is a chance to support my kids. It has always been hard for anyone to be able to express their sexuality in the way that they would so see fit, as nice as it would be to say that those hard times are over is far from reality. More than ever we need to be understanding and supportive of anyone who needs to be heard, understood, and most importantly respected. We are in the digital age where nothing goes away, once you have done or said something it's there to stay. I have shown my kids to love everyone as they are including themselves. Even though they are part of the LGBTQ community and have support and understanding, they are still scared to express themselves fully. I just hope one day the only flag we need to rise over our heads is one of unity. So we can stop with all the labels. Your you and I am me, no further explanation needed.](https://news.sfcollege.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/pride-wall2023-05-01-1024x1024.png)
![This month is about celebrating who we are and showing love to our community. It represents our history, and the ability to not hide ourselves anymore. Although there is still a long way to go, let this month be a reminder of why we are here, and why we continue to fight for our rights and the rights of future generations. Hope begins where fear ends. Happy Pride month](https://news.sfcollege.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/pride-wall2023-06-01-1024x1024.png)
