December 8, 2023 – With the support of SF’s Humanities & Foreign Languages Department and SF’s Provost Dr. Mercy Quiroga, the Santa Fe College Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Team was afforded the opportunity to travel to two IEB competitions this fall and wrapped up their 2023 fall season with impressive performances and a prestigious award.
As one of only two two-year colleges at this year’s Southeast Regional Ethics Bowl at Rollins College, SF’s IEB Team had impressive wins against Auburn University and the University of North Florida, finishing in the top half of the highly competitive field of colleges and universities.
At this year’s Two-Year College Ethics Bowl at Bakersfield College in California, SF narrowly missed going into the final round of competition with a third-place ranking. The team finished the fall season on a high note by being selected as this year’s recipient of The Spirit of the Ethics Bowl Award, an award given to the Ethics Bowl team that best exemplifies the spirit of Ethics Bowl, marked by a high degree of collegiality and support for engaging in civil dialogue across disagreement.
This year’s team included Team Captain and veteran Ethics Bowl competitor Amy Trask, along with first-time competitors William Robertson, Bryan Rowland and K’yovara Stark. The team is coached by Dr. Ann Thebaut and assisted by Dr. Li Ren-Kaplan, Dr. Bill Stephenson, Dr. Eugenio Zaldivar and Dr. Claire Orenduff.
Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl is about more than winning an argument and persuading others—it’s about engaging in authentic, collegial dialogue to deepen understanding of different perspectives on complex ethical issues.
