SAINTS DROP MFC OPENER TO ST. JOHN’S RIVER, 8-7

Palatka, FL – The defending Mid-Florida Conference champion Santa Fe College (9-8, 0-1 MFC) baseball team didn’t get off to the start they would have liked in conference play, dropping the opener on the road against St. John’s River CC 8-7.

Morgan McKinney got the start on the mound for the Saints and gave up three runs in 4.1 innings, all of them in the bottom of the first. Daryl Barnes took the loss for SF, surrendering five runs in three innings.

SJRCC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but SF bounced back with two in the second to cut the margin to one. The Saints tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double by Jeff Moyer.

The Saints broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth on a Joe Clouse two RBI single, but the Vikings answered back in a big way, taking a 6-5 lead in the bottom half of the sixth on a three run home run.

St. John’s added to their lead in the eighth on a two out, two run RBI to go up 8-5.

SF scored two in the ninth on a Zach Floyd RBI single and a RBI ground out by Brett Bozeman, but couldn’t get the tying run across.

Moyer, the Saints leading hitter on the season, was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Jardian Thomas was 2-for-3 and Nolan Malone 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The Saints will get another shot against St. John’s River CC on Friday when the Vikings make the trip to Gainesville for a game at 3:00pm.
