SAINTS CRUISE TO THIRD STRAIGHT CONFERENCE WIN, 80-54

Gainesville, FL – After a tight first twenty minutes, the Santa Fe Saints (14-5, 3-0 MFC) outscored Florida State College-Jacksonville 49-26 in the second half to win their third straight Mid-Florida Conference game.

“I’m very, very happy with our player’s effort in the second half,” said Coach Chanda Stebbins.  “It really hurt us in the first half when we missed so many open shots and also struggled from the free throw line.  We weren’t able to establish any rhythm.  In the second half we did a much better job finishing shots.”

The Saints went to the free throw line 48 times during the game and made 30.  Point Lanita Bartley was able to take advantage and hit 14-of-22 free throws.

“We have some players on this team that are very good getting to the hoop and drawing contact,” said Stebbins.  “We were able to penetrate in both halves, but I think we were able to execute and finish better in the second half, and that was a big difference.”

SF took an early 8-1 lead and trailed only once in the first half before taking a 31-28 lead in to the halftime break.

Demisha Mills and Lanita Bartley both made layups right out of the gate in the second half to build the Saints lead to 35-28 only a minute in to the second frame.

FSC-J fought back and cut the lead to one but SF answered with a 22-7 run over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach at 58-42.

SF made ten free throws down the stretch to push the final margin to 26 at 80-54.

Lanita Bartley led Santa Fe in scoring with 20 points and she also dished out five assists.  Leandra King controlled things in the paint and had 13 points to go with 13 rebounds.  Tracie Sneed also scored in double figures with 14.

“From start to finish Leandra played hard and gave great effort,” said Stebbins.  “She has really taken her game to another level over the last few games.”

The Saints will travel to Miami on Friday to take on Miami-Dade College at 6:00pm and on Saturday will continue their road trip in Lake Worth when they play Palm Beach CC at 2:00pm.
