The Collegiate Veterans Society at Santa Fe College is hosting its first job fair for veterans, with the goal of reaching out to veterans in a five-county area.
The fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 at Santa Fe’s Northwest campus, 3000 NW 83rd St. (32606) in Building R, room 01 (near the Administration Building).
“We brainstormed one day, working closely with personnel from FloridaWorks, to plan this job fair,” said Neri Olea, president, Collegiate Veterans Society.
FloridaWorks is publicizing the event directly to their clients as is the Alachua County Veterans Services Office. Both the University of Florida and SF Veterans Affairs offices are publicizing the fair to student veterans.
Veterans need to sign up in advance to attend the fair by uploading their information online at EmployFlorida (https://www.employflorida.com). There will also be an area at the fair where veterans can sign up for the event.
“Since this is a veterans-only job fair, we need to verify that everyone attending is, in fact, a vet,” said Olea.
More than 30 employers will provide information about open positions including federal agencies such as the U.S. Border Patrol, Department of Veterans Affairs, Federal Bureau of Prisons, USDA, and the U.S. Census. Many private employers will be present, including Cox Communications, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Remedy Staffing, and more.
Drew Hill, a Veterans Affairs staff member at Santa Fe, notes that veterans who are employed by federal companies will be able to build on prior federal service.
“Federal jobs help veterans because their active duty time counts toward federal retirement,” Hill said.
On-site interviews and applications will be available with some employers. All employers are immediately hiring so veterans should come dressed for success with several copies of their résumés in hand. Veterans should also bring their DD 214/VA Medical Card/Military ID and print out their Employ Florida registration page.
