SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
GULF COAST OUTLASTS SANTA FE, 78-65
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (8-9) led the #4 team in the nation, Gulf Coast CC (10-3) at the half, but the Commodores were just too much for SF in the second period as they pulled away for the 78-65 win behind the strong play of forward Kyra Crosby, who finished with 18 points.
“We played a lot harder tonight than we did yesterday, but just couldn’t come away with the win,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “I was proud of our effort for most of the game, we just didn’t have an answer for Crosby down the stretch.”
The Saints led 38-34 at the half, but the lead was short lived as GCCC outscored SF 12-2 to open the second period and didn’t look back from there, building as much as an 16 point lead late in the game.
Stephanie Edwards led the Saints in scoring with 18, Kindsay Brandt finished with 14, including three three pointers and seven rebounds, and Leandra King had 13 points and seven rebounds.
“These last two games against Chipola and Gulf Coast have provided us a chance to play against some of the best talent in the country,” said Stebbins. “That will only benefit our team as we get into conference play next week.”
The Mid-Florida Conference portion of the schedule begins on January 5 when College of Central Florida makes the trip to Gainesville for a 6:00pm game. The Saints are the defending back-to-back MFC Champions.
