SF MEN’S BASKETBALL

USC-SALKAHATCHIE SLIDES BY SANTA FE, 70-61

Gainesville, FL – The Saints (12-5) came up just short on Thursday night against USC-Salkahatchie after mounting a furious second half comeback, dropping their last game before conference play, 70-61.

“This is a tough loss for our guys,” said SF coach Chris Mowry. “Salkahatchie played very hard and ran a lot of different guys at us all night. They kept us off balance with different presses and did a real nice job on the offensive glass.”

SF trailed 11-0 early in the game and 34-26 at halftime after shooting just 27.6% (8-for-29) from the field and 9% from the three point line (1-for-11).

“We struggled early, but did a nice job at the end of the first and the beginning of the second coming back taking the lead,” said Mowry. “Once we had the lead we made some poor decisions with the ball that led to some easy baskets for them.”

Chad Renfro led the comeback in the second half, making three straight three pointers and Jerome Clyburn followed him up with two break away layups to cut the margin to 42-39.

The Saints took their first lead of the contest at the 11 minute mark on a layup by Eddie D’Haiti. Six minutes later Branimir Mikulic expanded the lead to 54-49, the largest of the game for Santa Fe.

USC answered with five straight points to tie things up and took control of the game with back to back three point shots to go up by six with 1:47 to go. The Indians made their free throws over the last minute of the game to pull out the win.

Eddie D’Haiti led SF with 19 points and nine rebounds, Chad Renfro finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jerome Clyburn had 11 points and five assists.

“Eddie played really well tonight scoring and rebounding inside,” said Mowry. “Jerome did a nice job getting to the hoop and also spread the ball around.”

The next game for Santa Fe is the Mid-Florida Conference opener on January 5 at home against College of Central Florida at 8:00pm.
