SANTA FE MOVES INTO FIRST IN THE MFC WITH WIN OVER DAYTONA, 58-53
Daytona , FL – The Santa Fe Saints (12-10, 4-1 MFC) took over sole possession of first place in the Mid-Florida Conference on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Daytona State College Falcons 58-53. SF moves a half-game ahead of College of Central Florida (13-9, 3-1 MFC), a team they will meet on Monday in Ocala.
Santa Fe controlled the game for the first 20 minutes and led 35-18 at the halftime break. Daytona bounced back in the second period and climbed within three with under one minute to go. With 40 seconds on the clock, the Saints missed back to back free throws, giving DSC a chance to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, Daytona guard Stormy Smith was able to get into the lane, but was short on a layup and SF managed to corral the rebound. Kindsay Brandt nailed two free throws, her only points of the game, for the final points of the game.
Leandra King had her way with the Falcons, scoring 15 points to go with 14 rebounds. She also blocked three shots, improving her school record to 105. Demisha Mills also finished in double figures with 13 points.
“Leandra had a great game today on both ends,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “What impressed me most wasn’t her scoring or rebounding, but the way she communicated with her teammates on the floor. Demisha also had a real nice game and was a difference maker on offense.”
The Saints travel to Ocala on Monday, January 24 to play the College of Central Florida in a battle for first place in the MFC. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm. The game can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
