STRONG PITCHING LEADS TO SAINTS VICTORY OVER POLK, 11-4

Winter Haven, FL – Santa Fe pitchers Malcolm Clapsaddle, Jarod Carlton and Ryan Yarbrough combined to throw a four hitter on Wednesday night in an 11-4 victory over Polk State College just two days after the two teams tied 10-10 in Gainesville.

Clapsaddle (2-0) started the game and threw five innings, surrendering two runs, one of them earned, with eight strikeouts. Carlton pitched the next three innings and gave up two runs, striking out five and Yarbrough closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.

Santa Fe (3-1-1) blew the game open in the seventh inning when Jay Laurienzo hit a three run homerun to make the score 8-4. SF added two more runs that inning and one in the eighth for the final margin.

Laurienzo finished the game 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI, Drew Doty was 2-for-4 with two runs, Zach Taylor 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Jake Huxtable 2-for-3 with a double and a run, Nathan Bandy 2-for-5 and Cory Elasik was 2-for-4.

“The guys really swung it well at times tonight and our pitchers set the tone for us with 14 strikeouts,” said SF coach Johnny Wiggs. “We just have to play better defense and be better situational hitters. All in all this was a great road win over a tough Polk team.”

The Saints return home on Friday, February 4 for a game against Pasco Hernando CC at 3:00pm
