SAINTS PITCH THEIR WAY PAST ST. PETE, 8-4

Gainesville, FL – The NJCAA #23/FCCAA #2 Saints (10-3-1) led 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth for the second straight game, but unlike Monday against Hillsborough they held on for the win.

Santa Fe received strong performances on the mound from starter Malcolm Clapsaddle (3-0) and reliever Kyle Rowe. Clapsaddle pitched six innings, surrendering four runs, just one of them earned. He struck out eight and walked two.

Rowe entered the game in the seventh and shut the Titans out the next three innings to earn his first save of the season.

St. Pete took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. SF answered in the second on an RBI singles by Cory Elasik and Jordan Turner.

In the fourth, Jay Laurienzo blasted his fourth homerun of the year to lead the inning off. Four batters later with the bases loaded, Jordan Turner laced a single up the middle, plating two more Saints runs to make it 5-2.

SF tacked on three more in the fifth inning, all coming with two outs. Tim Remes started the rally by reaching on an error and Cory Elasik followed with a single. Trey Griffin then worked a full count walk and Jake Huxtable cleared the bases with a double to right field.

St. Pete scored two in the sixth on a homerun by Sean Buckley, but couldn’t get any closer.

Jordan Turner and Jake Huxtable were both 2-for-4 with three RBI, Cory Elasik finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Jay Laurienzo was 1-for-4 with a homerun and Tim Remes finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Saints are now hitting .331 as a team with 19 homeruns while holding the opposing teams to a .226 average. The pitching staff has a 2.84 ERA with 133 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched.

Santa Fe opens a three game series against Rend Lake College (IL) on Friday, February 18 at 3:00 PM. The two teams conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
