SAINTS WIN AGAINST TAAG, 84-78 BEHIND 21 FROM MCLEOD AND WISEMAN
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints improved to 14-2 on the season Monday night with an 84-78 win over TAGG Academy in their last tune-up before they open Mid-Florida Conference play on Saturday, January 7.
In their second game back from the holiday break, the Saints played flat in the first half, trailing with just seconds to go before Kevin Harden tipped in a missed shot to give SF 43-42 half time advantage.
Santa Fe stepped up the defensive pressure to start the second period, holding the Ambassadors without a point for the first four minutes. The Saints built a 21 point lead with 5:50 to go, but TAAG came roaring back, scoring 25 points over the final six minutes to close within six. That’s as close as they would get as the Saints held on for the win.
“I thought we did a much better job at the beginning of the second half playing defense,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “TAAG did a nice job fighting back over the last few minutes and gave us a scare at the end. We kind of limped through the final stretch there and had a few injuries that were unfortunate.”
Josh Wiseman and Roger McLeod led the offensive charge, scoring 21 points each. McLeod finished a rebound shy of a double double and Wiseman scored 15 of his 21 on three point shots. Kevin Harden also finished just shy of a double double, knocking in 12 points to go with nine rebounds. Marko Djekovic had eight points and nine assists.
The Saints open MFC play on Saturday, January 7 in Ocala against College of Central Florida at 7:30 PM.
