SANTA FE ENDS TWO GAME SKID, POUNDS LAKE SUMTER 17-3

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (21-8, 3-2 MFC) bounced back from two losses over the weekend in a big way, racking up 17 runs on 15 hits in a convincing 17-3 victory over Mid-Florida Conference foe Lake Sumter CC.  The game was stopped after six and a half innings due to the mercy rule.

Six SF players scored at least two runs each and five Saints had two RBI apiece.  JT Simpson (4-1, 2.02 ERA) started on the mound and earned the win with five solid innings. He surrendered two unearned runs on four hits for his fourth victory of the year.  Dylan Barrow and Trevor Berry pitched an inning each in relief.

Santa Fe opened the scoring in the first when Mallex Smith scored from third on an error by the pitcher.  LSCC responded with two runs in the top of the second for a 2-1 lead.  The Lakers advantage was short lived as SF scored two in the second to retake the lead.

AJ Mazzurco started the frame with a walk and two batters later Garrett Greenwell doubled to put runners on second and third.  Blake Berger then stepped up to the plate and came through with a single up the middle, scoring both runners.

The Saints blew the game open in the fourth with eight runs on eight hits.  Mazzurco got things started again, this time with a double.  Trey Griffin followed with a single for the first run and Greenwell and Blake Berger nailed back to back singles to keep the rally going.  Jacob Tillotson executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base and Mallex Smith did his job with a single up the middle, plating two for the 7-2 lead.

Kennedy and Doty kept things going with singles, Caleb Denmark walked, Trey Griffin hit a sacrifice fly and Greenwell finished the inning with a single to score two more to make it 11-2 Saints.

SF didn’t let up and in the fifth inning added five more runs on three hits, all with two outs.  Doty started the rally with a walk and Shane Kennedy followed with a single.  Denmark cleared the bases with a double to left field and Ryan Rodriguez knocked in two more with a pinch hit double down the left field line.  AJ Mazzurco and Rodriguez scored two batters later on a misplayed grounder by the Laker second baseman.

Graham Cason put an exclamation point on the victory with his first collegiate homerun in the sixth inning.

LSCC managed one run in the seventh, but failed to get the margin under ten, forcing a mercy rule.

Mallex Smith finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases, Garrett Greenwell was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Blake Berger was 2-for-4, Denmark was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI and Griffin finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.

The Saints travel to Lake Sumter on Wednesday, March 14 for a game against the Lakers starting at 3:00 PM.
