Saints Weekly Wrap-up: March 5-11

Men’s Basketball (26-5 overall) Trailing St. Petersburg College by one with four seconds remaining, sophomore forward Matt Conway came up with some late game heroics, tipping in a Kevin Harden miss to give Santa Fe College a 57-56 lead in the first round of the FCSAA Tournament on Wednesday, March 7.  A blocked shot as time expired sealed the victory and the first win at the FCSAA Tournament for SF since the 2000-2001 season.

The Saints played tough against the #1 team in the state and led 44-43 at the half on Friday, March 9, but a much deeper Northwest Florida State squad rallied in the second half for a 93-70 victory, ending Santa Fe’s season.

Santa Fe finished the season ranked #4 in the state of Florida and #10 in the nation.

Baseball (2-2 on the week, 21-8 overall, 3-2 MFC) The Santa Fe Saints took care of business on Monday, March 5, dispatching of St. Petersburg College twice in dominating fashion, 9-6 and 13-3.  SF used a seven run second inning in game one to grab the lead after falling behind 5-1 and controlled game two from the outset.

On Friday, March 9 the Saints struggled to get anything going on offense, managing just one run on five hits against the College of Central Florida in a 3-1 loss.

The Central Florida Patriots continued their blazing start to the Mid-Florida Conference season, defeating the Santa Fe Saints 8-4 for their sixth win in a row on Saturday, March 10.

The Saints play at home Saturday against St. John’s River State at 1 p.m.

Fastpitch (2-5 on the week, 10-15 overall, 1-2 MFC) The Santa Fe Saints opened defense of their Mid-Florida Conference championship in a big way on Thursday, winning game one of a double header against Seminole State College 7-4.

Game two was suspended at the end of the sixth inning due to darkness with the Saints in front 7-5.  The final inning will be made up on March 31 in Gainesville before the scheduled double header.

On Saturday, SF lost two close games to St. John’s River State 4-3 and 3-2.
