Fastpitch Takes Two From Lake Sumter 4-1 and 8-2

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (29-21, 14-6 MFC) took care of business on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Lake Sumter Lakers 4-1 and 8-2. Karla Claudio tossed a two hitter in game one to earn the win and Erika Garcia pitched in relief to earn the game two win. Between games the nine sophomores were honored for their contributions to the program over the last two years.

In game one, the Saints scored two in the first on an Erika Garcia two run double, one in the second on a pass ball and their fourth run on a RBI single by Kimberly Booker in the third inning.

Claudio took a no hitter into the seventh inning before surrendering two hits and a run. Garcia took over with one out and the bases loaded and closed the game out to earn the save.

Garcia finished the game 1-for-1 with a double, two RBI and two walks and Shannen Marchu was 2-for-3.

Lake Sumter took the early lead in game two, scoring one in the top of the first. Santa Fe answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Garcia and one in the second on a RBI ground out by Booker.

The Lakers scored one in the third to even the score at 2-2 but the Saints exploded for three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull away. In the fifth Bianca Torres knocked in two with a single down the line and Marchu followed her with a triple to plate the fifth run of the game for SF.

In the sixth inning Jessica Threadgill knocked a bases loaded single to score Lindsey Fischer, Marchu drew a bases loaded walk and Booker drilled one down the left field line to cap the scoring.

Torres, Marchu, Claudio, Garcia and Sandiford each had two hits. The Saints had 14 hits in game two and held the Lakers to just six hits in two games.

Next up, Santa Fe travels to the College of Central Florida on Thursday, April 12 for a double header at 2:30 PM against the Patriots.
