Gainesville, FL – Karla Claudio willed the Puerto Rican national team to a victory over Venezuela on Tuesday evening in Yukon, Canada, pitching 6.1 shutout innings in relief after the starter surrender six first inning runs, giving PR their first win over Venezuela in eight years.
The Puerto Rican bats came alive in the fifth and sixth innings when PR plated nine runs to win 9-6. Besides the stellar performance in the circle, Claudio was also 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks, making her 6-for-6 in her last six at bats and 9-for-16 overall with seven RBI in the tournament.
Puerto Rico is 3-3 overall and play their final game of pool play July 19 at 4:30 PM against the Netherlands.
Former Saint Erika Garcia (2009-10) is also competing in the World Championships with Mexico. The Mexican national team is 0-6 but Garcia has done her part, hitting .308 for the tournament, starting every game at shortstop.
