SF BASEBALL – 2/15/2013
Gainesville, FL – The Miami Dade College Sharks scored runs in only two innings but it was enough Friday afternoon to slip past the Saints 7-5. A grand slam by Victor Cartini in the fourth after two hit batters by SF starter JT Simpson proved to be the difference in the game.
MDC (10-2) got on the board first with three run in the second inning on three hits and two costly Santa Fe errors.
The Santa Fe (9-3) offense answered with two in the third on just one hit and three Miami errors but Cartini’s gram slam in the fourth erased the SF rally and put the Sharks ahead 7-2.
The Saints hung around thanks to two combined scoreless innings by relievers Jose Batatino and Luke Helms. In the eighth pinch hitter Colby Lusignan came through with a two RBI single and Caleb Denmark closed the gap even further in the ninth with a solo homer. That’s as close as they would get however as MDC reliever Marcus Barrios closed the door to secure the win.
Simpson (2-1) tossed seven innings and allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts. Miami Dade starter Ivan Paleaz earned the win with six shutout innings.
Andrew Fears and Casey Scoggins were the lone Saints with multiple hits. Fears was 2-for-4 and Scoggins 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Saints travel to St. Petersburg College on Saturday, February 16 for a double header against the Titans at 12:00 noon.
