Daytona, FL – It took seven innings, but the Santa Fe bats finally awoke to lead the Saints past Daytona State 12-3 on Saturday afternoon. SF entered the top of the eighth trailing 3-2 but exploded for 10 runs to turn a one run game into a rout.
Dylan Barrow started on the hill and tossed six innings, allowing three runs, two of them earned. He struck out four and walked just one Falcon batter. Derek Vail (3-3) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief and Caleb Denmark recorded the final two outs.
The Santa Fe offense struck first, scoring one in the top of the first on a Caleb Denmark RBI groundout. Daytona answered with one in the fourth and the Saints bounced right back in the fifth with a run on a single by Casey Scoggins, scoring Jamal Martin, who started the inning get hit by a pitch.
The Falcons scored the next two runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to take their first lead of the game 3-2.
In the eighth, Santa Fe plated four to go ahead 6-3 and the flood gates opened in the ninth when the Saints put six runs on the board to put the game away.
SF pounded out 14 hits, eight of them in the last two innings, and drew eight walks. Jonathan Camp finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, upping his season total to 24. Andrew Fears was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Jarred Mederos was 3-for-5 with a RBI and Casey Scoggins was 2-for-6 with a RBI.
The Saints next game is at home on Monday, March 18 against Daytona State College at 3:00 PM.
