Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints opened up the Mid-Florida Conference portion of their schedule on the right foot Wednesday evening, knocking off the Florida State College-Jacksonville Blue Wave 74-56.  FCSAA #6 SF is now 16-4 overall and 1-0 in the MFC.

Shea Jones led the way with 21 points and Jon Hood had 17.  Eleven players played double digit minutes for SF and Coach Chris Mowry was encouraged by the effort he saw from every player on the defensive end.

“I thought we defended well in the first half and was very pleased with the effort,” said Mowry.  “In the second half FSC-J hit some tough shots and stayed in it for a while.  We talked about taking care of the ball and looking for good shots.  We did both well down the stretch.  This was a nice way to start conference play.”

The Saints opened the game strong on both ends of the floor and led 14-4 in the early going.  They continued to pressure the Blue Wave the rest of the half and took a 37-22 lead into the locker room at the break.

FSC-J stayed with SF in the second half but never managed to close the gap as the Saints went on to the 18 point win.

The Saints will face their toughest test of the season on Saturday, January 25 when the defending NJCAA National Champion College of Central Florida Patriots come to Gainesville for a 4:00 PM tip.  The game can be watched live on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints

“We need to work hard in practice the next couple days to be ready for a very tough Central Florida team,” said Mowry.
