SF College Music Students Will “Jazz Up Spring” on April 16, 2015

Three student bands directed by Music Professor Steve Bingham will “Jazz Up Spring” in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, in the Fine Arts Hall at the Northwest Campus of Santa Fe College, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville.

Tickets are $15 main floor and $12 balcony for adults; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for Santa Fe College faculty, staff and students with college identification cards. The program includes many audience favorites performed by the Santa Fe Jazz & Soul Orchestra, the Santa Fe Rhythm and Blues Band and the Santa Fe Jazz Combo. Featured vocalists are Artyssa Grant, Kelly McGill, Eric Garard and David Winter. Several members of the Santa Fe Singers will also perform.

The Jazz & Soul Orchestra’s selections include “Yearnin’,” “Crisis,” “Stolen Moments” and “Cascades,” all by Oliver Nelson, and “Sway” by Gimel/Ruiz.

The Jazz Combo’s selections include “Autumn Leaves” by Kosma/Mercer/Prevert, “Recorda-Me” by Joe Henderson, and “Ornithology” by Charlie Parker/Bennie Harris.

The Rhythm & Blues Band’s selections include “Old Time Rock and Roll” by G. Jackson/T.E. Jones III, Santana’s “Black Magic Woman,” and “Shake, Rattle and Roll” by Bill Haley and the Comets.

In addition to Band Director Bingham, other faculty members of the SF College Fine Arts Department lent their skills to production of the concert. Special thanks to Dr. Mitch McKay, Assistant Professor of Music, Piano Studios; Professor Lynn Sandefur, Vocal Studios and Santa Fe Singers; Professor Emeritus (UF) Gary Langford, Brass Studios; and Professor David Becker, Woodwind Studios.

Past members of the Santa Fe College bands have performed at Carnegie Hall, Epcot, Florida’s Lakeside Jazz Festival and CityWalk Universal Studios. The bands also tour high schools throughout North Central Florida.
