Africa comes to Florida Feb. 24

UF Professors Patricia Hilliard-Nunn and Robin Poynor will give a presentation and discussion titled Africa in Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 3:30 in the SF Library Lobby. They will talk about art created by Floridians of African descent and traditions that hold together African-American communities in Alachua county, with an emphasis on how visual and cultural practices from sculpture to cooking to hair design can connect our past and present.

Dr. Hilliard-Nunn is an African-American Studies scholar and community organizer, and Dr. Poynor is an art historian and co-editor of the recently published Africa in Florida: Five Hundred Years of African Presence in the Sunshine State.

This event is SF’s contribution to the 2016 Imagining Florida public humanities event series, developed in coordination with UF’s Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, the Matheson History Museum, and the Alachua County Public Library.
