April 3, 2018 – Three bands—the Santa Fe College Big Band, the SF Jazz Combo and the SF Rhythm and Blues Review—will share the stage at the 11th annual “Jazz Up Spring” concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018, in the Fine Arts Hall at the Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83 Street, Gainesville.
Tickets are $15 general admission; $9 for seniors, children and University of Florida students; and free for SF students, faculty and staff with college identification cards. “There’s something for the whole family to enjoy in this program,” explained SF Music Professor and Band Director Dr. Steve Bingham, Ph.D. “Come celebrate the end of our spring semester with some down-home jazz!”
“The Rhythm and Blues Review will channel Aretha Franklin with vocalist Candace Rhodes performing ‘Chain of Fools,’ ‘Respect’ and ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” Bingham continued. The Review will also perform “I’m So Excited,” a hit for the Pointer Sisters.
The Jazz Combo will perform Freddie Hubbard’s “Up Jumped Spring,” “Meditation” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jerome Kern’s “Yesterdays” featuring Lauren Woodall on vocals, and “What Is This Thing Called Love?” by Cole Porter.
Featured vocalists with the Big Band include Dianna Truman singing Ella Fitzgerald’s version of “I Only Have Eyes for You,” Lauren Woodall on “Sway” and Mac Oliver singing Frank Sinatra’s version of “Night and Day.” Other selections feature different instruments including the piano on “Ya Gotta Try,” trumpet on “Blues in the Night” and saxophones on “Bernie’s Tune.”
Other Big Band selections include “Lullaby of Birdland,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” and “There’s the Rub” by Gordon Goodwin, which Bingham describes as “a very fun funk chart.”
“Jazz Up Spring” is sponsored in part by Santa Fe College, SF Student Life, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
