September 16, 2019 – The Santa Fe College volleyball team split a pair of matches this weekend against Florida Gateway and Indian River State College. In the Saturday morning match the Saints knocked off Florida Gateway 25-13, 25-19, 25-11 improving to 3-6 on the season. SF was led by Madison Sheffield with 12 kills and hit a sparkling .429.
“Maddie has been a leader for us on and off the court all year. She deserves all the credit for the win,” said Saints head coach Nick Cheronis.
In the afternoon match, the Saints dropped a hard-fought battle in five sets, 14-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 14-16. Mikaya Collins had a break out match with 14 kills while Sheffield and Zoey Chilcote chipped with 10 each.
“Our outside hitters kept us in the match,” said Cheronis. “But until we learn to cut down on our unforced errors, we will continue to struggle in the close ones.”
The Saints continue non-conference play at St. Pete College Tuesday, then begin defense of their 2018 Panhandle Conference title playing against FSCJ Thursday and Pensacola State College Friday. Both of those matches will be at Florida State College – Jacksonville.
