Having been influenced more by Orthodox Christianity than Western Europe, Ukraine observes Christmas on January 7 every year. It also celebrates additional holidays during the months of December with foods, outfits, and decorations that reflect the unique history and culture of Ukrainian society.

Understanding the Human Costs of the Conflict in Ukraine

Thursday, January 23, 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in S29
In March 2014, Russia occupied Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. The following month, an armed conflict erupted between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Over 13,000 Ukrainians have died in the conflict during the last five years and thousands more have been left injured and maimed. The toll of war has been felt by everyone in the country. Ukrainians long for peace, freedom from Russian interference, territorial integrity, economic prosperity, and democracy. Join us for this presentation by Dr. Anna Ageicheva, a visiting scholar from Poltava National Technical University in Ukraine, as she explains the many ways this conflict has impacted the lives of ordinary Ukrainians throughout the country.
