SF’s Brain Bowl Team Prepares for National Tournament

January 25, 2021 – Brain Bowl is an academic quiz tournament in which teams from different school compete against each other answering questions on topics as diverse as literature, art, history, geography, mathematics, sciences and popular culture. The Santa Fe College Brain Bowl team has been very active this academic year and made some exquisite lemonade out of the COVID-19 lemons they were handed. Since March, all practices and tournaments have been held online. This fall, the team competed in three tournaments, placing in the top three in all of the competitions, including a first place finish in the annual Delta-Burke tournament hosted by Valencia College in November.

This year, the team consists of Matthew Gilinson, Alexa Rivers, Mason Sexton, Alejandro Jimenez-Tellado, and Zack Zayas.

As 2021 began, SF continues its winning ways, going undefeated in the Santa Fe College Winter Invitational Jan. 15-16, and pool A of the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) sectional championship tournament Jan. 24.

The most recent feat automatically earned the team and invitation to compete in the NAQT national championship tournament that will be held online the last week of February.

Other activities in February include a tournament organized by Florida Gateway College and a practice tournament to prepare for the Florida State Championships.
