March 16, 2021 – Santa Fe College was one of eight colleges and universities recognized for their work on international education and was named a recipient of the 2021 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization from NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Named after the late Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, the Simon Awards recognize outstanding innovation and accomplishment in campus internationalization in overall excellence or for specific programs.
SF received the Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization for integrating international education throughout all facets of college life.
SF President Paul Broadie II, Ph.D. praised the college community for the work they have done to earn this recognition from NAFSA. “We are honored to be among the eight exemplary U.S. universities and colleges – and the first community college in Florida selected to receive this prestigious award,” the president said. “For years, our college has placed a priority on educating students to be globally competent and prepared to interact and engage in a global society. Members of the Santa Fe family have been unwavering in this commitment to internationalize the curriculum and instill intercultural competence in our students. This recognition is a testament to their outstanding work and expansive impact. As a result of their work our students are exposed to a myriad of global learning experiences and are prepared to succeed in a globalized world.”
SF will be recognized later this year during NAFSA’s virtual conference. The college is also planning on additional celebrations of this honor during International Education Week in November.
“This award recognizes the work that many faculty, staff, and students have engaged in over the past 20 years,” added Dr. Vilma Fuentes, SF’s Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Some of these individuals are still at Santa Fe College. Others have retired or moved to other roles in their lives. All deserve thanks and credit for helping us achieve comprehensive internationalization.” In addition to the conference and other events to be scheduled throughout the year, SF will be featured in NAFSA’s report, Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, to be published this fall.
