SF Brain Bowl Team Wins State Championship

March 29, 2021 – Over the weekend, the Santa Fe College Brain Bowl team won the FCSAA Florida State Championship Tournament. The team, consisting of Matthew Gilinson (team captain), Alejandro Jimenez-Tellado, Alexa Rivers and Zack Zayas,   went undefeated in 4 preliminary rounds held on Friday and 5 top bracket rounds on Saturday. They faced Chipola College in a 36-question championship round, defeating Chipola 590-390 to become the Florida State Champions.

In addition to a perfect 10-0 record, Gillinson finished first overall in the individual standings, and teammate Jimenez-Tellado finished fourth overall. It was the first state championship under head coach Asha Brunnings. The team will now prepare for the national championships for colleges and universities which will be held in early April. SF earned that invite after placing second in the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament at the end of February.
