November 8, 2021 – Please make plans to attend the upcoming retirement celebration for Fred Evans Thursday, Nov. 18, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the President’s Lobby. Fred has served Santa Fe College with a spirit of excellence for 22 years as the Desktop Manager in User Services for Information Technology Services (ITS) since April of 1999.  His official retirement date is Jan. 3, 2022.

Fred taught as an adjunct faculty for Information Technology Education before moving over to ITS. During his SF career, he has held positions that included Help Desk Supervisor, Customer Support Supervisor and Desktop Manager, User Services. Over the past 22 years, he has worked closely with the college’s mission in support of students, faculty and staff. He improved the college classrooms from mobile AV support carts to fixed classroom computers and projectors. His commitment to automation of services and support allowed SF to meet ever-increasing student enrollment (and increasing faculty and staff) with little or no increase in support manpower.  His area’s response to supporting COVID-19 technology requirements was indicative of his dedication to the college mission.

Prior to his SF career, AWCM Evans also served his country with the United States Navy and retired after 26 years as an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator Master Chief Petty Officer. During his distinguished Navy career, he served during the Vietnam War and Gulf War.  He was awarded often during his Navy career including the Meritorious Service Medal from the President of the United States for his service to the Pacific Fleet Intelligence Command (citation classified) in 1989 and the Navy Commendation Medal from the Secretary of the Navy for LAMPS MK III helicopter training programs in 1991. After attending the Senior Enlisted Academy at the Naval War College, he completed his career as the Command Master Chief for Helicopter Antisubmarine Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in 1998.

Bill Penney, ITS Chief Information Officer said “When I think about Fred, I immediately go to a person who can do anything!  Whether it’s at work creating innovative technology solutions and always being a ‘student first’ manager or in his off time fixing cars for all who ask or repairing the roof on his home, there really seems to be nothing Fred can’t do.  Fred is a true one of a kind!!”

Harry Reider, ITS Desktop Support Technician said “Fred has been a very supportive boss, allowing his technicians the freedom to solve their problems on their own terms, as a collaborative or single focused task. He has been the subject matter expert on many topics within Desktop Support, and his door was always open. He always had the big picture in mind and didn’t sweat the small stuff. When the going got tough, he would be right in the middle, hands-on, in the thick of it. He didn’t have to run a tight ship, and it was always smooth sailing.  His steadfast leadership will be missed, and we wish him the best for whatever is next in life.”

Phil Scarpace, ITS Desktop Computer Specialist added “Fred’s energy, enthusiasm, and his unwavering dedication to keeping our department functioning will be his legacy.  A legacy that will reverberate for many years to come.”

Fred was preceded in retirement by his wife and longtime SF employee, Brenda Evans.  They both are planning to travel the country as full-time RVers and enjoy many sunsets over our National Treasures.
