SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (9-17, 4-7 MFC) fought back from a five point halftime deficit to force overtime, but came up just short in the extra period, falling to the Daytona State Falcons 58-54. The loss moves Daytona (11-15, 3-7 MFC) within a half a game of SF for the coveted third place and final MFC state tournament berth.
The Saints started the game slow and scored just 20 in the first half on 8-of-23 shooting and trailed at the break 25-20.
Santa Fe fought back in the second half and Desa’Rai Shaw completed the comeback with a three pointer at the 11:17 mark to give the Saints a 38-37 lead, their first since the opening points of the game.
The game went back and forth over the final 10 minutes and the Falcon’s Monterika Warren put an exclamation point on regulation by nailing a game tying three pointer with a minute and half left to knot things up at 49-49. Neither team scored the rest of the way, and the game went in to overtime.
In the overtime period DSC grabbed a hold of the lead and never let it go, holding on for the four point victory.
Shaw led Santa Fe with 12 points, Jaquasha Sesler had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Jocelyn Mousty scored nine.
The Saints will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, February 19 at Hillsborough CC at 6:00 PM.
